China Law & Practice Awards Methodology

Deals of the Year

Information for the Deals of the Year is drawn from research conducted for China Law & Practice, IFLR 1000 and Asialaw Profiles. Further enquiries are then made regarding particular details with the firms involved to confirm all details.

To be considered for the Awards, deals must (a) be relevant to the China market, (b) have closed between July 2007 and July 2008 and (c) demonstrate some degree of innovation, an unprecedented level of complexity, or be a “first” for the China market. While the financial value of the deal is not in itself a criterion, size is taken into account where it has an impact on the complexity of the deal.

The winners will then be chosen based on which deal was the most ground-breaking and is likely to have the most impact on the legal market. Deals that are innovative in terms of dealing with new regulations, finding new ways of overcoming regulatory obstacles, or that contribute to the evolution of the legal landscape in China will be recognized.

Firms of the Year

The shortlists for Firm of the Year are also a result of Asialaw Profiles and IFLR 1000 research. Peer recommendations and market presence, as well as the IFLR 1000 rankings, are used to determine the leading firms in each category. Data from all sources is pooled and firms are ranked in each category using this information. The winners will be the best performing firm from these shortlists. Presence on shortlisted deals is also taken into account when deciding on the winners.
