The law of designs in India is incorporated into the Designs Act, 2000, which lays down four essential requirements to qualify for design registration. The design law in India gained prominence with the evolution of textile technology and now has a marked presence across a range of products and industries. Designs, being an outcome of human intellect and effort, need to be protected. In order to guard the designs element in the manufacture, it is essential to afford protection to the same. The requirements that need to be satisfied to facilitate registration as a design include that:

(i) the design should be a feature of shape, configuration, pattern, ornament, or composition of lines or colour;
