Foreign firms may list in China this year

    Deregulation could lead to relaxation of forex controls

    Foreign companies will be allowed to list on the Shanghai stock exchange, and some arrangements may be finalised this year.

    On May 11, China and the UK issued a joint statement saying that China had agreed to allow qualified foreign companies, including UK companies, “to list on its stock exchange through issuing shares or depository receipts in accordance with relevant prudential regulations”. Two days later, the Shanghai Daily reported that plans for foreign listing were moving ahead quickly and quoted sources as saying that preliminary arrangements may be worked out this year.
