China National Petroleum Corporation has recently acquired a 35% interest in Syria Shell Petroleum Development (SSPD). SSPD is 100% owned by Shell and has three production licences that cover over 40 oil fields. This transaction further boosts CNPC's relationship with Shell.

A Herbert Smith and Stibbe team advised CNPC. Herbert Smith's Asia energy head Anna Howell led the team along with Stibbe's Amsterdam energy head Martin In de Braekt. Shell was counselled by its in-house team.
