Independent since 1839, the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg is a constitutional monarchy with the Grand Duke as head of state. Its territory covers 2,600 square kilometres and its population amounts to some 450,000. Luxembourg benefits from an advantageous position in the centre of Western Europe. Paris, Brussels and Frankfurt can be reached within two to three hours by car and the airport of Luxembourg-City provides direct connections to the major economic and financial centres of Europe and the world.
Luxembourg is a founding member of the EU and belongs to other major international organisations such as the UN, NATO and the OECD. Luxembourg is also a member of the Economic and Monetary Union (EMU). Important institutions of the EU, such as the European Court of Justice and the European Investment Bank, are established in the city of Luxembourg.
